Description
Pro-Life Ethics in a Throwaway Culture is a reading course developed by Dr. Charles Camosy, The course investigates resistance to what Pope Francis frequently calls a throw-away culture through the development of habits of encounter and hospitality. The class challenges participants to set aside political agendas and ideologies in order to develop a consistent ethic of life both intellectually and personally. Throughout the units of the course, students will learn the meaning of a throw-away culture, while also developing a framework that develops connections between life issues and the commodification of the human person. In the course, students will attend to life issues including reproductive biotechnology, poverty, abortion, war, capital punishment, ecology, and euthanasia.
Students in the course must have their own copy of Dr. Camosy's Resisting a Throwaway Culture (Hyde Park, NY: New City Press).
Course Content
Unit 1: Consistently Protecting and Supporting Life
Unit 2: Reproductive Biotechnology
Unit 3: Abortion
Unit 4: The Poor and the Stranger
Unit 5: Euthanasia and the Margins of Life
Unit 6: State-Sponsored Violence
Course Format
- Seven weeks in duration; first week for orientation.
- Up to 20 students in each course.
- Video summaries with text based lectures.
- Supplemental readings are provided to encourage further exploration, internet links provided for all readings.
- Written assignments (200-250) required.
- Facilitator-moderated weekly Zoom sessions with participants.
Participation Requirements
- View summaries and read the assigned chapters for each unit.
- Read assigned texts; keep notes, questions, and comments for class discussions.
- Answer weekly discussion question.
- Respond to weekly unit assignment.
- Attend weekly Zoom for each unit. If you cannot attend, you can still meet the participation requirements.
- Complete the course evaluation.
Required Texts

Time Expectations
3 to 5 hours per week, depending on your learning style and schedule.
Course Certificate
An electronic certificate of completion awarding 35 contact hours will be available in course when completing all course requirements.
